Training Chopsticks

Vaughn is now officially potty trained! After 2 days in a row of successful potty training, he's done with diapers. I still put him in diapers at night, only because I'm paranoid but he has not gone in his diapers the last two nights. So far, so good! He's been in his underwear a lot just cause it's easier to take on and off. Besides, I love him in his underwear - he's just too cute!

Too Scared To Move

We went to take pictures with Santa Claus today and this year, the kids did not cry. But they were scared frozen as you can see in their faces. Just about every day, starting a few weeks ago, one of the kids will ask me when we were going to see Santa Claus. They would get so excited when I'd tell them soon - they would get to have their picture taken with him. Then when we actually saw him, they had second thoughts. I promised that they wouldn't have to sit on his lap. Just sit next to him and that seemed to work but there was still a lot of hesitation. Overall, a great success as I got the photo that I wanted.

We received a package a few days ago! It was from grandma and grandpa Dornan, with a countdown to Christmas chocolate calendar. The kids were so excited. I think Kendall remembers doing this last year. It is now become part of our Christmas tradition. And what a delicious tradition it is!

It's so funny to see them eat it the same way.

Thank you grandma & grandpa!!! You make Christmas even more exciting than it already is.

Counting Backwards

Every night, a little before bedtime, Kendall and Vaughn have to do their homework assignments. These homework assignments are done over the internet, where the teacher then checks to make sure it's been done, and done correctly. Can I just say I LOVE LOVE LOVE Kendall's teacher?!?!? She is phenomenal and soooo dedicated. By far the best teacher I have ever met in my entire life.

For me, education is a high priority for my children. When Kendall complains that she doesn't want to go to school, I try to teach her that if she doesn't go to school, she will miss out on some key learnings she will need later in life to award her the best opportunities. I want her to be happy. Part of her happiness will rely on the career she ends up in. I want her to be smart enough to make the right choices because life is full of good and bad consequences from those choices.

What's great about this age, 4 for Kendall and 2 for Vaughn, is that they are so full of questions. They just want to understand why things are done they way they are done. I strive to answer those questions for my children so I can teach them because I know that one day, those questions will come few and far between - and they won't want to listen to my answers.

Zoo Lights Members Only

Well, we visited the zoo lights again this year but the differences from last year included:
1. first time they have had a members only preview. so it was like we had the whole zoo to ourselves, instead of dealing with the massive crowds
2. they changed up the route and some of the lights
3. and the biggest difference: Vaughn was on good behavior!!! YAY! Last year, we had to deal with major meltdowns and temper tantrums that involved lying on the ground as people passed by and stared.

It was quite a bit chilly so we warmed up a few times by going into some of the buildings. Here are the kids.

Vaughn wanted to walk most of the time, which was great when he could keep up with the rest of us. Towards the end he complained that we were all walking too fast. So we were able to convince him to get into a wagon and he really liked it.

We're Back

We are back in Denver after a week long trip to Ohio to spend Thanksgiving with our family and friends. It was great seeing my parents and my in-laws, and of course my beautiful sister - I know the kids just loved seeing them too. We LOVE them soooo much!!!

We are slowly settling back into normal every day life. We found the motivation to put up our Christmas decorations today, except for the tree ornaments. We plan to do that tomorrow night. Had to get them done this weekend because the upcoming weekends this month look pretty busy. And well, you know me - I can be such a Kate!

Photos below are from the airport as we waited for daddy to get the car. They had so much fun just running back and forth, and I had so much fun just watching them. I adore my kids and I adore my husband. I'm really living a life I could have only dreamed of.

A Party Fit For Butterflies

We recently went to a birthday party for one of Kendall's friends. The party was held at the Butterfly Pavilion and turned out wonderfully.

There was a show and tell with various creepy crawly creatures.

The girls received these pink butterfly wings, while the boys got visors that had tarantulas on them.

Kendall had fun letting the tarantula crawl on her hand. Twice! She went back for more.

They got to see them release the butterflies, they did crafts, and received a guided tour of the facility.

Another Dump of Snow

Kendall is very much into Disney princesses so it was an obvious choice to have that as her 4th birthday party theme. I did some quick chalk drawing on our sidewalk. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chalk eraser and enough time to make the drawings better.

Sleeping Beauty is Kendall's favorite princess (at the moment).

Princess Ariel is probably a close second.

The guests arrived and we started off with making jeweled crowns to wear later in the party. Then they moved on to make sugar cubed castles.

All the princes received a sword and ended up using it to chase the princesses around.

Somehow Vaughn found himself cornered by the princesses.

But he managed to get away.

It was time for cake and ice cream. Before we sang happy birthday to Kendall, all the kids got their sugar cubed castles back. In the castles, I placed little tea candles. We turned off the lights and lighted all the candles up so they could blow them out when Kendall blew hers out. Vaughn's sugar cubed castle was just a row of sugar cubes! He did more eating of the sugar cubes and frosting, then building it.

Kendall did not want the party to end as she had a hard time with the goodbyes, but she was looking forward to opening all her presents!

It's Not Easy Having an Unbirthday

It's difficult to explain to a 2 year old why it is not his birthday week also. This past week has been trying for Vaughn as he watched his sister open a new present every day.

He often asks "Where's my happy birthday cake?" or "Where's my happy birthday present too?" I respond honestly and say that it is not his birthday. He must wait until next year, and that right now - it is Kendall's birthday.

This doesn't go over too well. Often times, when he is upset with Bill and I, he turns to his sister. Today, he had gotten into a "fight" with one of his schoolmates and told the kid "I'm going to tell my Kendall!" I love this bond he has with her. I hope it grows stronger with time.

....and just like that it was done. No tears. No screaming.

She wanted it. I hadn't really planned on it. At least not that night.

I was the one who was afraid but tried to not let the fear show in my face or voice.

We walked into the store to just get me a necklace.

I nonchalantly asked Kendall if she wanted to get her ears pierced. Her face lighted up and she said yes a little too eagerly. That's when all the doubt started creeping into my head as I looked at her little ear lobes and wondered if they were still too small to fit a pair of earrings in.

I thought of her being in pain and I said in a serious voice "It's going to hurt a little. Are you sure?"

She asked "Is it going to hurt ten times?" I told her no. Not ten times. Maybe 3 times.

She nodded her head and said "I want my ears pierced."

And just like that, the decision was made. My heart aches a little right now because it's another milestone in her life that says to me she's growing up. She's so brave. So willful. I'm so proud of her. I love her. *sniff*

Lollipop the Size of Your Head!

Today, Kendall awoke to another present - a bag given by grandma and grandpa Dornan, full of beautiful clothes.

So of course Kendall asked if she could wear one of the outfits she received and I had to oblige. I love this dress, as does Kendall. Her favorite part about it is the fact that it "swirls" really well when you turn.

After school, the kids went to the local mall and daddy spoiled them with love and material things as he often does because he just can't say no to the adorable faces staring back at him, pleading for more. So Kendall scored some new jewelry, and both kids received these lollipops.

Lollipops the size of your head. There huge but the expression on the kids' faces were priceless. The couldn't have been more excited.

I have a feeling it will take them several months to actually eat it. I also have a feeling mommy will end up throwing it away after a few days.

Snow White which spelled phonetically is By Jhen Gohng Joo in Mandarin. Day 2 of birthday week and Kendall is now the proud owner of a beautiful Snow White dress with matching shoes.

So what does Snow White want on day 2? Ice cream. White ice cream to be exact. It just so happens that in the mail that day, we received a gift certificate to our favorite local ice cream place: Bonnie Brae Ice Cream from our awesome realtor who sold us the house we live in now. Free ice cream? You bet I was happy! We would have gone to DQ instead if not for the gift certificate.

Vaughn said he wanted the brown one, so we got him chocolate. I love when he says "mmm" after every lick.

Of course there was no one else there because who goes to an ice cream parlor when it's about 40 degrees outside? We love that though, when no one else is around. Bill and I don't feel like we have to keep are kids quiet but have you ever noticed how quiet kids are when they eat ice cream? I notice it all the time at birthday parties.

Unfortunately though with the cold weather, sometimes eating ice cream isn't the best experience. Kendall started shivering uncontrollably. She didn't want the ice cream anymore but just the cone.

Dad being the prince that he is went and got his coat for her and all was soon well again. And they all lived happily ever after. The end.

Kendall's Birthday Week Begins

With Kendall being into princesses this year, I decided her birthday theme will be exactly that: Princesses.

Today started day 1 of birthday week, and Kendall got this beautiful Little Mermaid dress and shoes.

So of course, we had to head on over to the local swimming pool.

And the kids enjoyed it. Immensely. Kendall really seem to take to a large water slide that she and daddy did four times.

Vaughn and I did the slide once.

...but he was way more interested in playing with all the various water gadgets.

I think if it weren't for them getting hungry, we would have stayed all day long. They really loved it that much.

Alice in Wonderland

Snow in October

No, these aren't pictures from last year. These are pictures from Thursday. We were just dumped with so much snow that the kids schools were canceled for two days. So we decided to take advantage and headed to the nearby park to sled, eat snow and make snow angel.

Pumpkin Carving

The kids got to help out with the pumpkin carving more this year than in the past. They didn't actually do the carving but they did try to help clean them out.

I love how little Vaughn's is and that he loves the fact that his "pop eye" (that's how he pronounces pumpkin) is green. It's not even a pumpkin.

The kids "helped" dad with his pumpkin too - making it a harder than it needed to be for Bill.

And here's the end result! From left to right: Bill (scary face); Kendall (bat); Vaughn (happy face). Vaughn's pumpkin is so little that Bill couldn't place the top back on because it would snuff out the candle.

What little boy does not love a firetruck? Noah's 4th birthday party was pretty spectacular! They were able to arrange for the local fire dept to swing by his house with a fire truck and firemen. It was really cool! They must have stayed for at least a 1/2 hour.

I was hoping Vaughn had gotten over his fear of the firetruck but alas - he's still pretty intimidated. Kendall was indifferent - she's such a girly girl sometimes : )

Vaughn has obsessively been acting like a kitty cat. He meows every day and will sometimes correct me and say "I'm not Vaughn. I'm a kitty cat." No doubt he got this from his sister.

Heaven on Earth

Tonight I laid next to my son, pretending to be asleep. At first, he tossed around - laying his head on top of my face (not comfortable at all but still I loved it). Then switching and laying his head on top of my tummy. Later switching again to prop his feet on my legs.

Somehow, as I turned to lay on my stomach, he climbed up on my back and sat down. The next thing I know, he's sitting on my head. All of this is done in silence. All of this done in the dark.

Finally, he settles into his own space, facing me - looking at me - my eyes slightly opened to watch him. His beautiful eyes staring at me :) He then takes his little index finger and traces the lines of my face. It is a very loving gesture, which he ends with a gentle kiss on my cheek. This is called heaven on earth. Please let these moments last forever.

An Angel Sleeps

This past week, my daughter's been sleeping in my bed with me as both my children have been sick - and we wanted to keep them separated so they wouldn't wake each other up when they had coughing fits.

I love watching my kids sleep. They look even more smaller than I remember in the day. They look so vulnerable. So innocent. So perfect. So angelic. I usually will lay and just stare at their faces until I'm so tired, I can barely stay awake anymore.

One of my favorite memories as a child is my mom coming into my bedroom while I slept, brushing the hair out of my face, covering me up in blankets to keep me warm, and giving me a kiss. I would barely be conscious of her act but I felt her love. I cannot help but think of her when I do the same thing for my children. I cherish these moments as I know they are fleeting.

Sticking Out

I noticed awhile back that when Vaughn is concentrating on something, he'll stick his tongue out - whether it's painting, putting together a puzzle or gathering rocks.

Watching him do this, I can't help but reach out and touch his tongue with my finger because it's so cute. To which he responds "No mommy!"

This Boy

This boy... This son of mine... I love him so much! My heart aches with so much love. These past two days I've had to work from home so I could take care of him, and let him rest so can fight this cold he got a few days ago.

Every time I look at him or hear his voice, I just fall in love again. I can't stop hugging him, holding him, carrying him around and giving him kisses. He will always be my little baby. Always and forever.

New Used Car

After surviving about 5 years with only one car, we finally broke down and purchased a second one off of grandma & grandpa Dornan. The kids just love it and always ask to ride in the "new" car! In the beginning, Vaughn would just cry if he didn't get to ride in it whenever we went out.

Race To Open

Often times when we go somewhere, there is a race between Kendall and Vaughn to open the door. And by open, I mean pressing the handicap button to have the door open electronically. As soon as one of them sees that there is such a button, they have to press it.

If Kendall wins out, Vaughn throws the biggest tantrum, crying and sometimes lying on the floor - until finally the door closes and he gets a chance to press the button. We make quite an entrance I tell you. Whether it's at the mall, the library, the museum...

Oh yes! My son! Hee hee! Kendall has been going through this "I want to wear a different dress now" phase where she wants to change her outfit several times a day. Don't worry I put a stop to that.

During one of these times, I was making such a big fuss about how cute Kendall looked in the dress she was wearing, Vaughn took notice and wanted to be in a dress too. So I obliged and dressed him up. We looked in the mirror together and I had to lavish all the same compliments I had on Kendall because I didn't want him to feel left out. Anyway, Bill was none too pleased.

Vaughn went to his first amusement park this weekend for a friend's birthday party, and enjoyed the kiddie roller coaster rides. He did cry on some of them but on some, he was fine. He didn't smile though. It was this scared but I think I like it look. Kendall did not like it at all. Just the very slow ones.

So we were on our way to someone's house when we spotted deer roaming around all over their neighborhood. Towards the end of the video, I ask Vaughn if he could see the deer and he responds "I can't see it." So Bill backs up the car, hoping to give him a better view and Vaughn not understanding, thinks we are driving away. His reaction was so unexpected, I thought something else was happening - like he hurt himself or something.

Bill and I took the kids to play tennis with us. We had it all planned out... The boys against the girls, gently tossing the ball over the net so the kids would have an opportunity to hit it with their racket.

However, the kids had other plans. Like just hanging on the net for as long as their arms would let them.

Laying around in various areas...

Letting mom and dad play a few rounds while they sat back and watched... I couldn't believe they just sat there.

But their favorite thing to do was chase each other around the court. Bill and I had so much fun just watching them.

Vaughn running to me, wanting me to pick him up. I'm so happy to oblige. Any excuse to hug and kiss this beautiful boy.

We are planning another tennis outing very soon.

Do You Like Your Ice Cream?

I can't help but always ask my kids if they like what ever they happen to be eating or drinking at that moment. And when it comes to ice cream, there really is no question as Kendall expresses her satisfaction with a continuous head nod & tongue sticking out. I don't know why, but every time she does it - I have to laugh, partly because she looks so funny and partly because she is just so darn cute! Man, I love my kids!!!!

This car is a popular toy in our home. You may have remembered it from Vaughn's 2nd birthday - when we took a trip to the Build a Bear store. It is really a car meant for stuffed animals but Vaughn insists on using it himself as well.

When Vaughn finally turned his attention on to something else, Kendall gave it a try. Not that interested, she got out pretty quickly and Vaughn got back in...making car sounds like vrooooooom and crashhhhh. Here's to enjoying our cars (right grandpa Dornan?)!

Do you like this outfit?

Good. Because you might see it a lot. Kendall requests to wear this outfit every day. If she was just staying at home, I'd probably let her wear it as much as she wanted but not when she goes to school every day.

Nearly every morning, we would go through this ordeal about what she was going to wear. Heaven forbid I put her in pants or shorts.

When she does get to wear her favorite outfit, she won't stop smiling. And it immediately puts me in a great mood because I love it when she smiles. She asks me knowingly "Do you like my dress?" I respond "Do you mean your skirt? That's not a dress." She replies "Mommy. I'm just pretending it's a dress."

Now...whenever she gets to wear a skirt or "dress" she says "I'm Vanessa!" At first, I was confused. Who's Vanessa?? Turns out she's one of the characters in The LIttle Mermaid movie. So all day long, every time I say "Kendall" - she says "No mommy! I'm VANESSA!" Do you know how many times I forget and call her Kendall? Hundreds! So do you know how many times she corrects me? You guessed it. Hundreds!

As soon as we change her into pants or her pajamas, she proclaims "I'm not Vanessa anymore." I ask "Who are you then?" She says "I'm Kendall." Sheesh.

Today, we visited the dentist to get her teeth cleaned. I walk up to the front desk and let them know that Kendall is here for her appointment - to which Kendall immediately responds "No! I'm Vanessa!" The receptionist looked up at me puzzled. And for a few seconds, I was a little embarrassed because I was imagining what this receptionist might be thinking - like "Is this person trying to get away with having a child impersonate herself as someone else, just so that the visit will be covered under insurance?" Ha ha ha! I know that's probably ridiculous but it was the first thing that popped into my head.

Anyway, during the rest of the visit - all the employees we interacted with called her Vanessa. Kendall was quite pleased. And poor Vaughn. I don't think he understands why every time he calls his sister Kendall, she corrects him.
